coltan is a conflict diamond. the other day on the red carpet of the nme awards i wore a shirt that i made five minutes before the carpet that said "coltan is a conflict diamond". immediately everyone actually began asking me about conflict diamonds and whether ashlees ring is one.
it was actually meant to be a metaphor. coltan is not a diamond at all. a friend gave me some reading on what coltan is and what it does and the truth is it essentially is a conflict diamond that many of us, me included own. rather than bore you with poor grammar and spelling of my own, check out this piece that explains it better. the piece is a bit out dated and i will find a more recent on with new developments.
i am also beginning to speak with a group that works specifically in the congo about raising awareness on issues there.

as far as solutions, im not sure boycott politics will work, possibly recycling old cellphones might? i would look to engineers and people much smarter than me for the answers to that.
much of the problem is that the details on it are so murky. corporations often are fuzzy when asked where their coltan comes from. not many people know about the issue as there are clearly groups who profit off of this and it is in their best interest to not let us know where the parts from our cellphones or videogame systems are coming from.
